It is just like with our entire body, and our eyes are no exception – unless they hurt, or feel irritated, we often overlook their role and functions. The fact that we can see is simply “a common thing” for us. We have collected some interesting data to find out how complex our eyes are. There are many interesting things about eyesight, here are the 10 most striking ones.

1. Eyes are thought to have first developed in animals as early as 550 million years ago.

The unicellular organisms had first eyes in the form of simple photoreceptive proteins.

2. In humans, the eyes begin to develop very soon.

Two weeks after conception, cell bases begin to form.

3. So small and so complex.

The human eye has 2 million working parts.

4. If the human eye was a camera…

It would have a resolution of 576 megapixels.

5. Wink, it is literally a snap.

One blink lasts 1/3 of a second.

6. Eyeballs do not grow.

Whilst the nose and ears change size during your life, your eyeballs remain the same size since birth.

7. The eye (yet) cannot be transplanted.

The reason is because there are more than 1 million nerves that connect the eye to the brain. This is a challenge for ever-evolving modern surgery.

8. The eye regenerates very quickly.

With proper care, minor injuries / scratches will heal within 48 hours.

9. Our brain relies mainly on the eyes.

Up to 80 % of our memories and learnings are determined visually.

10. Take care of yourself.

Did you know that up to 80 % of vision diseases and problems can be solved by contemporary medicine? Unfortunately, not everyone has access to quality care, and there is unnecessary increase in blindness (especially in Africa). Moreover, even if we have available medical care, we often underestimate the problems.
