Drooping upper eyelids are one of the most common reasons why patients seek out a plastic surgeon. However, the problem is not always located in the eyelid itself. For many people, a “heavy” or tired look is caused by sagging eyebrows – a condition that cannot be fully corrected by an upper eyelid lift alone. In such cases, a brow lift, meaning the surgical elevation of the eyebrows and upper forehead, becomes the treatment of choice.
What is a brow lift surgery?
A brow lift aims to reposition the eyebrows to their natural, more youthful height, reduce the feeling of heaviness over the upper lids, and open up the eyes. At the same time, the procedure smooths the forehead and softens the vertical frown lines between the eyebrows.
Unlike upper eyelid surgery, which only removes excess skin from the lids, a brow lift addresses the underlying cause of the droop — the weakening of the supportive structures of the forehead and eyebrow.
The age range for this procedure is broad. A brow lift is performed on younger individuals with naturally low-set eyebrows as well as on patients aged 40 to 70, in whom brow descent is part of the natural ageing process.
Who is a brow lift suitable for? – Expected results and longevity
A properly performed brow lift offers several benefits:
- Elevation of the eyebrows, especially the outer part
- Relief of upper eyelid heaviness, often with functional improvement in peripheral vision
- A more open, youthful and refreshed appearance
- Smoothing of the forehead and reduction of vertical frown lines
The results are long-lasting because the brow lift treats the anatomical root of the problem. Although the natural ageing process continues, a brow lift “turns back the clock” significantly and, for many patients, reduces the need for additional procedures in the upper face.
Brow lift or upper eyelid surgery – which is better?
Modern plastic surgery offers several techniques for eyebrow lifting. In practice, surgeons rely mainly on the endoscopic brow lift and the direct brow lift. Each method has its own indications and is recommended individually for each patient, based on anatomical features: for some, a brow lift is appropriate; for others, eyelid surgery; and for some, a combination of both.
Endoscopic brow lift – the gold standard
- several small incisions in the hair-bearing scalp
- the forehead and brow tissues are gently released and elevated with the help of a small camera
- minimal scars hidden within the hairline
- very natural results without an “overdone” look
The endoscopic brow lift is the technique most commonly used by plastic surgeons in Prague, as it combines a short recovery time, natural results and a low complication rate.
Direct brow lift – highly effective, but for specific cases only
- incision placed directly above the eyebrow
- allows extremely precise shaping and adjustment of height
- often suitable for older men with significantly descended brows and thinning hair, where other techniques are less appropriate
- main disadvantage: a more visible scar, which is why this method is used selectively
Other methods : Techniques such as temporal (lateral) lifting, which elevates only the outer brow, often provide limited results. Coronal or hairline lifting, more extensive open procedures, carry a higher risk of scarring and hair loss and are therefore rarely used today.
