Plastic surgery is not only about aesthetic enhancements

What can plastic surgery solve and how do tastes and preferences differ around the world? In our mini-interview, we asked one of our specialists, Dr. Petros Christodoulou, a plastic surgeon from Prague to share his views on the topic.

About Dr. Petros Christodoulou

After the graduation (Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague) he worked in a number of hospitals in the Czech Republic. He specialises in aesthetic (breast procedures, belly procedures, facial procedures and lipografting), as well as in reconstructive surgeries. He is one of the most sought-after surgeons here in the Czech Republic, not only thanks to his surgical skills, but also thanks to his renowned friendly and open approach to patients. His successful practice stands on three pillars: lifelong learning, humility and an individual approach & communication.

ACCORDING TO STATISTICS, IT SEEMS MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE HAVING PLASTIC SURGERY. WHY DO YOU THINK IT IS SO?

In general, interest in aesthetic surgery has been on the rise in the past decades, especially in recent years. It used to be taboo for some people, but this is not the case today. Some procedures are also widely promoted, including social networks such as breast augmentation or background augmentation.

ARE THERE A DIFFERENCES IN TASTE / PREFERENCES IN THE WORLD?

Yes, there are definitely differences, let’s take breast augmentation as an example. In the United States and Great Britain, women prefer larger breast implants on average. On the other hand, in continental Europe, women are more likely to prefer smaller sizes, let’s say more naturally looking breasts. Another thing that strikes me is the popularity of buttock augmentation. It is one of the most common procedures in the United States and in other Western countries, while in the Czech Republic it is still in little demand, although its popularity is gradually increasing here as well.

IS PLASTIC SURGERY ABOUT AESTHETIC ENHANCEMENT ONLY? WHAT OTHER BENEFITS ARE THERE?

Plastic surgery is far from being just about aesthetics. It may surprise someone, but beauty enhancement surgeries are just the tip of an iceberg – they represent only about 10% of the total amount of all plastic surgeries. This particular field includes also and above all, reconstructive surgeries. This area can solve serious medical conditions and their consequences, such as replantations of amputated limbs, microsurgical tissue transplants, breast reconstructions after ablation, burn medicine, congenital defects of the face and limbs, injuries and post-traumatic conditions, hand surgery and others… All these subfields make the area of plastic surgery one of the widest, most extensive and most diverse fields in medicine as the surgical procedures are literally performed from head to toe.
