Plastic surgery has always been the royal discipline of aesthetic medicine… Why is this so and are the trends? How can aesthetic surgery support your self-confidence and help you to sort out your physical limits? We have asked a renowned specialist in this field for an opinion. Dr Vera Satankova knows her clients, knows their wishes, and has helped many of them, not only here in the Czech Republic, but also around the world.

As one of the leading experts in facial plastic surgeries and breast procedures you surely note current trends – growing numbers in various surgical beauty enhancement procedures. What, in your opinion, are the reasons?

Every year, the number of clients undergoing plastic surgery increases – the most common and the most sought surgeries being breast and facial ones. The main reason is the interest to look good and to boost self-confidence, both are important for balanced mental health. Face is actually the first thing that catches your eyes when in direct contact with other people. This can subconsciously affect you during social interactions and negotiations, whether it is a business meeting, or just a social gathering. This phenomenon has been already described in many psychological studies. Already in ancient times, women used make-up in attempt to cover loose skin or deep wrinkles, then plastic surgery was developed to maintain the “eternal youth”.
Present times also put great emphasis on our external appearance and worship the cult of youth. That’s why plastic surgery procedures are on steady rise. For example – breast surgeries have been the most sought ones for many decades. For us humans, breasts are erotic symbol, sign of femininity and motherhood. A slim waist usually doesn’t get so much attention, but perfectly shaped breasts are always attractive.

You have gathered working experience not only in the Czech Republic, but also abroad, do you observe differences in taste/expectations when you compare our country to the rest of the world?

When comparing e.g. Europe and the United States, here in Europe we prefer more “natural look”. In America, and especially in areas influenced by Hollywood standards, the social pressure and the desire to look young often result in doing plastic surgeries more often and repeatedly. This may sometimes lead to a not entirely natural appearance. Statistics also show that in America, clients undergo plastic surgery up to 6 times more often than in Europe.
