Liposuction or abdominoplasty?

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0 | October 2nd, 2019

Probably the most common question that a patient asks when making a decision to do something about the belly (abdominal area). Both interventions have benefits when applied effectively. How to choose the appropriate procedure? Our article can help you.

What do they have in common?

Liposuction and abdominoplasty (often referred to as tummy tuck) are two completely different types of plastic surgery. There is one thing in common, though: the goal. An aesthetic correction of a part of the body, resulting in reduction, flattening and firming of the abdominal area.

What is the difference?

Liposuction (done under general anesthesia, up to 2 hours in the operating theatre, 1-2 nights in the hospital post procedure)

This procedure is for patients who need to remove fat deposits (small to medium sized) stored not only from the abdomen, but also from the hips, thighs and buttocks. This procedure removes fat using the suction method and removes fatty bumps / bulges. Therefore it is also an effective way how to contour your body. Modern plastic surgery also offers you fat transfer.

Who’s not for?

Liposuction is not meant as a primary method how to achieve significant weight loss. Obese patients are advised to concentrate primarily on gradual weight loss using other methods, including bariatric procedures. Liposuction can then be a reward and refine the results of your effort.

Abdominoplasty (under general anesthesia, up to 3 hours in the operating theatre, 2 nights in the hospital post procedure)

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excessive skin including suturing of loose muscles and ligament layers, if necessary. Unlike liposuction, this procedure does not focus on fat pockets but on modifying skin layers and muscles. Patients after life changing events which have had an impact on the appearance of the abdomen, such as previous significant weight loss or pregnancy, or other surgical procedures, are ideal candidates in this case. This procedure is not suitable for people who:

  • are planning another dramatic weight loss
  • are planning another pregnancy
  • need to lose weight radically first
  • their medical condition does not allow general anesthesia

All these factors play important roles in making the decision about liposuction / abdominoplasty. As the previous lines suggest, the two procedures are fundamentally different. And at the same time, they can be very effectively combined. We will tell you more next time. Do you want to consult us about liposuction, or tummy tuck? Contact us now!
